who loves ya (frankie) baby

the pater familias of anyone's guess turns (...oh, let's not put a number on it) another year older today. a.g. had initially wanted to put up some captain zoom to celebrate. then i remembered frankie baby telling me listening to the captain on your birthday was a little like having your younger brother bite you in the face.

(or maybe it was that it costs 13$ for a single blipping mp3 file. what is that some kind of joke, cap'n zoom? are you setting me up with that 13$ remark and your expert comic timing for a punchline delivered just before cart checkout? cause if it is a joke, if it is - well, sir, i don't get it. sincerely, your ex-number 1 fan.)

instead, to celebrate his cumpleanos in style, sans zoom, a.g. has cobbled together a little batch of songs that, well, just put to music exactly how we're all feeling about dear ol' francis on his most special day.

heartless bastards - done got old

okay, all right (insert noise of party-halting needle jerked from vinyl here), fair enough, that was a low blow. just kidding pops. you know you're only as old as the woman you feel. (sorry mum.) but anyway schnook it's not how you feel it's how you look, and you look marvelous. here then, properly:

lydia lyndall - what a man
david myles - when it comes my turn
greg brown - ain't no one like you
ivana xl - unforgettable
maerz - everybody's had a hard year
paul simon - born at the right time
my morning jacket - what a wonderful man (what you thought there wouldn't be a proper rock anthem in the mix?)
the beatles - in my life (aww... must. not. get. weepy.)

and lastly, though it's not really of a piece thematically, the cherry on this little sundae,* for the man who one halloween outfitted his six year old son as the boss, could only be bruce. here's a stellar live rendition of the first springsteen song my father played for me. (first i remember anyway.) from his 1975 concert at hammersmith odeon in london:

bruce springsteen & the e street band - rosalita (live)

cheers, frank-o. happy birthday. aaa--aa--aaand many moooooooore!
