as i listened to this song earlier this evening i couldn't help but feel disappointed in how deeply i engage life. weeks can pass between instances of sustained, examined emotion; weeks where notice is barely paid to how carelessly thoughts & feelings are discarded, how stridently i avoid deliberation, and subtler and cleverer ways are found to convince myself killing time has a purpose. and it isn't until accidental happenstance, such as being available to a song at the right moment, outs me that the full extent of the condition presents itself & the appropriate remedial steps can be taken. how long it all lasts is - wait for it - anyone's guess (i know, sorry) but today i'm grateful to ani difranco for writing and playing witty, emotionally resonant songs, like "falling is like this," capable of shaming intellectually lazy boys like myself closer to engagement.

i couldn't number all of the reasons i heart ani, but this song would surely be among them. hope you like it too.
