encountered this song unexpectedly this evening, about two-thirds of the way into sean penn's excellent & stirring adaptation of into the wild, and it reminded me how much i love it, and how little i've listened to it of late. in the film (or so we're lead to believe) it's kristen stewart singing and emile hirsch - who's thoroughly charming as alexander supertramp - lending backing for the chorus. despite at one point possessing numerous variations, anyone's guess has managed to hang onto just one, by fellow massachusetts-native susan tedeschi:
