wishin' & feelin'

there's been some talk lately that a.g. might need to do a better job diversifying its portfolio. estimates have put the playlist variation at average to quite average. this post should hopefully prove that when a person or an event comes along to jolt or appraise me i can take some appropriate action, although i am better known for my hospitable remarks.*

lorez alexandria - i'm wishin'
nina simone - feelin' good

both of these songs are sort of thematically relevant for a.g. these days, though i hadn't previously thought of them as a couplet. listening to lorez alexandria last night, however, and in particular "i'm wishin'," the connection to nina's "feelin' good" seemed as obvious as an elephant. (and not simply for their grammatical resemblance.) both address the deflation particular to the (terminally?) uncoupled, yet "i'm wishin'" feels more wistful, less terminal in a way, than nina's "feelin' good" and it's heavy-struck minor chords. lorez, buffeted somewhat by a lighter & more buoyant melody, can acknowledge her sadness without letting it sink her whole; there's hope for her still. nina, though, notwithstanding ultimately arriving at something of an emotional outburst, has given into cynicism, her gallows humor reinforcing just how dire things have grown. the predicaments are similar, though not certainly not the same.
