i [heart] zooey (and matt)

she & him, whose first album, volume one, will be released in middle march, is a teaming up of the fabulous zooey deschanel and another a.g. perennial favorite, m. ward. most of the songs on volume one (more in the works?) were written by zooey, who has the chops, with two covers mixed in for good measure, and the whole thing has the feeling of a record you might find in your grandparents' attic, warm and leisurely-paced vignettes. have a listen to the first single:

she & him - why do you let me stay here

also check out their fine covers of "you really got a hold on me," originally by smokey robinson and the miracles, and "bring it on home to me," by sam cooke, both of which of course fit snugly into the vintage era sound.

she & him - you really got a hold on me (live)
she & him - bring it on home to me (live)

and here they are playing a version of ward's "magic trick," which appeared first on his post-war album:

she & him - magic trick (live)

she & him will be playing the great american music hall on 2 march as part of the noise pop festival. tickets? well, it's sold out, unfortunately. which means you have two options: first option) buy a noise pop badge for 180$ that will get you access to all general admission shows; or 2nd) hit up craig's list.

I usually don't expect much from Motown or Sam Cooke covers but both of those are pretty good. M Ward's just alright in my book, but maybe this pairing will be worth paying more attention to.

Also, we knew Zooey's voice from good from watching Elf--either that, or they had a good overdub voice. But it seems like the former.

Interesting fact:

Smokey Robinson admitted he wrote "You Really Got a Hold on Me" after hearing and being inspired by Sam Cooke's "Bring it on Home to Me."

This past fall I read an article about M. Ward and Ms. Deschanel teaming up and have wondered how the duo would fare. Judging from these tracks, I'd say the match is a good one. Glad you posted them.
