scotland yard gospel choir

the scotland yard gospel choir is a musical collective from - yup, you guessed it - chicago, who fashion and play what i want to call, what my impulse is to call a jangly, high energy brand of songs. but of course that's not entirely true, or rather it's true only up to a point where it becomes slightly less true. though they have a less overt gospel influence than their name might suggest, they are quite capable of dialing it down while still delivering the goods. (which is pretty much a prereq for collectives, by the bye.)

but this song, "aspidistra," is a dose of those energetic little flavor pills, a homily of a song about drugs and youth culture, the decline of neighborhoods - "i used to buy drugs down on aspidistra, i used to by drugs, i knew all the police by first name, how are the wife and kids? i'm just hanging out no need to run me in" - and growing up, growing old, getting wise. "and if you asked me now, i'd say, i'm not sorry but i wouldn't do it now."
