asking for flowers, kathleen edwards's new album, is out. i can't offer you any salient opinions, because i haven't heard the whole thing yet, but we can, i think, at this point, take it as given that it will be excellent. or, really, you should just listen to some of it and decide for yourself. cause what do i know anyway, right?
i would like to take a second to point out one track of note first, though, before you run off to experience the world for yourself. the track is called "sure as shit" and it's lovely and it's here:
kathleen edwards - sure as shit
part of why i love edwards's music is her indelible, puckish sense of fun. she's mischievous and clever and she lets us, as a listening audience, in on the jokes (in ways that the songs' subjects often are not). this particular track, though, isn't terribly funny. there are humorous moments, images - funny people can't help themselves - as in the opening lines: "choosing my words carefully has never been my strength. i've been known to be vague and often pointless." but her sometimes caustic nature has been largely suspended in "sure as shit" and what's left behind is a remarkably even-handed, generous and pretty love song - a love song that evokes a specific love, a particular relationship rather than love in general - & perhaps it's me, or perhaps it's dependent upon my mood, but i find that rather affecting.
edwards will play the independent in may (the 20th). check out the rest of her tour dates here or here. also, edwards has her own blog and it can be offered as further evidence of her excellent sense of humor.
