song obsession :: tonight, you belong to me

josh ritter with blake hazard- tonight you belong to me

there's not terribly much i can say about this week's song obsession you all won't discover for yourselves the moment you hit the play button above, other than it might be the most charming little tune in the entirety of the a.g. music library. originally written back in 1926 by billy rose and lee david, and made famous by gene austin the following year, "tonight, you belong to me," has since been covered by too many acts to list (though i'd be remiss for not pointing out eddie's duet with janet weiss of sleater-kinney (r.i.p.) and a rendition by fiona apple) and even showed up in the steve martin film the jerk.

this version, by josh ritter and blake hazard and part of ritter's snow is gone ep, rings in a minute thirty-six and features harmonies killer enough to make even lines this simple sound remarkably fetching: "although we're apart you're part of my heart and tonight you belong to me." hoorah for transient romantic bliss.
