thousand rice grain vocabulary

do you know enough words to fill a bowl of rice? can you correctly identify gemsbok as oryx? freerice.com asks these very questions by posing a running multiple-choice (english) vocabulary test. each correct definition (some of the words are a bit idiosyncratically defined) earns twenty grains of rice - paid for by the advertisements at the bottom of the page - to be distributed to hungry persons through the united nations world food program.

so far, in less than a year of operation, freerice.com has enabled the purchase of nearly 26 billion grains of rice by the u.n. wfp. just imagine if we had better vocabularies...

again, you can play the game here; it's fun, takes hardly no time at all, and can help thousands of people in poverty. well - what are you waiting for?
