turned out to be, as expected, a phenomenal final day in golden gate park, gang. every set we saw, and several we weren't able to see (andrew bird, sadly, among others) but heard tell of from neighbors, was exceptional in some fashion. bon iver, who, after radiohead, may have been for us the delight of the weekend, played a warm, inclusive, fantastic show; sharon jones moved in four-inch heels better than we do in bowling shoes; wilco - ah, wilco - were their usual superb selves, with nels shredding on guitar & tweedy cracking jokes between songs. we felt, as did it seemed a fair few others in attendance, that wilco should have closed the festival down as the sunday headliner. but after the energy and intensity of the other shows jack johnson and his unflappably relaxed, unshakably pleasant catalogue of songs provided a near perfect coda to the weekend. the festival may have had its share of logistical problems, as festivals tend to do, but if as thom yorke said on friday night it's about the music, then outside lands can be fairly judged a success. here's hoping the first annual begets a second.
but we promised to get on with things tonight, didn't we? after the last three days it was hard to choose an appropriate song for this week's edition of sunday night live. in the end we sided with both novelty and convenience. here then are sharon jones and the dap kings covering james brown's "it's a man's man's man's world," which they played to close out their set this afternoon.
