sacramento alt-confectioners cake recently installed an array of solar panels on their own upbeat recording studios, effectively removing themselves from the power grid. here's an excerpt from the band's release:
CAKE is very pleased to announce that we have installed a solar array on the roof of our studio in Sacramento, California. We hired a company with great experience and competence, Borrego Solar, and they set us up with a way to break away from our dependence on the city's energy grid. Working on a new album, we feel satisfaction in the common denominator of together embracing the unlimited resource of the sun.while we recognize that you weren't holding off dinner until you'd had news of how cake plans to address issues of environmental sustainability, and that plenty of bands have taken similar actions - jack johnson's brushfire records probably the best known among them - it's still important, we think, to highlight when bands do good works or decide to act mindfully and responsibly. especially environmentally good works. brings us good cheer and all that, sets an example. though to be fair, similar logic would compel us to report when a neighbor starts composting or when the vacant corner lot becomes a communal garden.
anyway, cake, as mentioned in the announcement above, is currently holed up in the studio working on their sixth album, which, the band says, will be produced using one hundred per cent solar energy. find out more about the project, the band, and natural power options here.
