hope most of you local folk got a chance to join the masses at speedway meadow in golden gate park this afternoon for the conclusion of hardly strictly bluegrass. since we spent most of the day shuffling around over there - aside, that is, from a spectacular three set run on the rooster stage featuring will oldham, greg brown and sam beam - we figured for tonight's episode of sunday night live we'd do something a bit different: highlight a couple of live songs from the catalogues of each of the three acts mentioned above. in other words, you all are in for a particular treat.
and just as a quick editorial note: the version below of "the trapeze swinger", which song led off sam beam's set this afternoon - an occasion that one of my companions mentioned might not be the best way to win over a large outdoor crowd but which had the dell near rapturous silence by its end - performed by sam and his sister and broadcast on npr's all songs considered, is probably our anyone's guess all-time song obsession. we mean, it's really that fucking good.
