sunday night live :: u2

rather enjoy this live version of "staring at the sun," from the 1997 u2 album pop, for, among other reasons, the robust picture it creates of the band. the musicianship is quality, of course, and the songwriting - like much of bono's work - flirts with but stops just short of preachiness and a treacly sentimentality; it's serious but accented with a sense of fun. that sense of fun is on full display in this recording, both in bono's introduction to the song, in which he thanks the people of mexico city for the burritos, and at the song's end, when he ruminates on what it might be like to be called the edge. and that's part of why, gang, we've chosen this particular song for our weekly edition of sunday night live.
